What is an LEI?

What it is

A Legal Entity Identifier is a 20-character code that identifies one legal entity worldwide. It's defined by the ISO 17442 standard and published openly in the Global LEI Index.

Who asks for it

Banks and brokers need your LEI before they can carry out and report trades in securities and derivatives for your company (MiFID II/MiFIR, EMIR). It's also increasingly used in payments and under DORA.

What it shows

Your company's legal name, address and registry number. Large companies also show who owns them.

Free to look up

Anyone can search LEI data for free. You pay only for the work of validating and keeping your record up to date.

The LEI lifecycle

Issued

Your data has been checked against the company registry and published.

Renewal due

Every LEI must be re-checked at least once a year.

Lapsed

The renewal date passed. The code still exists, but its status shows it's behind schedule.

Renewed / Transferred

You can move management of your LEI to another issuer. The code stays the same.

FAQ

Does my AS need an LEI?

Only if a bank, broker or authority asks for one. Typically that's before trading listed securities or derivatives, which MiFIR transaction reporting and EMIR derivatives reporting require.

What happens if it lapses?

The LEI stays valid but shows "Lapsed". Many banks won't execute trades for clients without a valid LEI, so renew before the date.

Can I move my existing LEI?

Yes, through a transfer. Your LEI code doesn't change.

Is LEIPHY an LEI issuer?

No. LEIPHY handles the ordering. An accredited LEI issuer validates and issues the LEI.
